EASTERN CAPE – The International Electoral Commission (IEC) of South Africa reported an exceptional start to the voter registration weekend, with over one million registrations recorded across the country by the close of the first day 18 November 2023. Day two, 19 November 2023 commenced smoothly with 91 percent of voting stations open by 8 AM and the rest following suit shortly after.
As of 12:30 on the 19 November 2023, a total of 609,447 registration transactions were logged at the 23,296 voting stations countrywide, with the Eastern Cape recording 118,574 registrations.
However, challenges were noted in online registrations, with a portion of uploaded images being unreadable or unrecognizable by the system. The Commission urges voters to exercise caution and follow system prompts when uploading their identification images.
Despite these challenges, the Commission praised the thousands of South Africans who utilized both online and in-person registration methods to either register, re-register, or verify their details. Encouraging those who haven’t yet taken part, officials urge citizens to use the remaining time of the registration weekend to engage actively in the registration process.
