UNIVERSITY OF FORT HARE – Walter Qusheka, director of Garden To Floors PTY LTD(traded as Qusheka Cleaning Services), has had his multi-million properties siezed by the National Prosecutor Association (NPA) Asset Forfeiture Unit(AFU) following the implication of Qush Cleaning Services in University of Fort Hare corruption scandal.
The NPA’s AFU obtained a provisional restrained order against Walter Qusheka along with his wife (Vuyokazi Qusheka), Thobile George , Yolisa Songca and Lungelwa Finward. All of which are currently facing criminal charges of fraud and corruption.
The value of the assets restrained is R14,3 million, which is set to increase as the cort-appointed curator investigates the assets of the defendents. The university’s former Contracts Manager, Thobile George, who had no legal power to extend contracts, continued to extend the contract of Qusheka Cleaning Services on a monthly basis after their contract expired in 2015. This resulted in a heavy loss of R19,2 million for the University of Fort Hare.
Luxolo Tyali, Spokesperson of the NPA in the Eastern Cape region says,” The granting of the provisional restrained order by the high court, demonstrates the in-roads that the law enforcement agencies are making into the corruption criminal activities in the University of Fort Hare. The business man, Walter Qusheka and his 4 co-accused against who’s assets the NPA’s Asset Forfeiture Unit has secured a restrained order, allegedly unduely benefited R90 million from the University, with the help of the official who did not have the power to extend contracts. The official was allegedly paid R4 million by Walter Qusheka.”
The spokesperson went on to say,” The restrained order effectively means the assets cannot be disposed by the accused until the matter is finalised. The fraud and corruption case is due in the East London Regional Court on the 4th of August 2023.”
With everything that transpired, from the assassination attempt of The Vice Chancellor to the revelation of R19,2 million lost by the hands of corruption. It is clear that corruption at institution is at an all time high.
The multi-million assets secured show the commitment and determination the SAPS and NPA have in putting a stop to the corruption and criminal activities in the University, for a better future and safer learning environment for future students and a better future for the institution.
