EAST LONDON – The Eastern Cape Health Department is taking proactive steps to address the growing mental health crisis in South Africa, the department hosted a Mental Health Policy and Strategic Planning Framework Development Session held at the East London International Convention Centre(EL ICC).
The session, which started on the 1st of August 2023 and concludes on Wednesday the 2nd of August 2023, served a platform for healthcare professionals, stakeholders, and experts to discuss and create effective strategies for addressing mental health concerns in the province. During the session the MEC of health in the Eastern Cape Nomakhosazana Meth highlighted the department’s commitment to addressing the issue,”we are appointing thirty-one (31) registered counsellors. Already, twenty-six (26) have already been appointed, others declined the offers, but we are confident we will fill the five remaining posts,”Meth said.
The MEC further mentioned the appointment of a new mental health director Mr Tshali, improving mental health services and support in the province is essential to ensure that individuals can lead healthy and fulfilling lives. By prioritizing mental healthcare, the Eastern Cape Health Department aims to reduce the incidence of suicide and provide the necessary resources and care for those living with mental disorders.
