EAST LONDON – The Port of East London is set to achieve a significant milestone in its objectives by servicing external vessels at its Princess Elizabeth Dry Dock. This is thanks to a new contract the port has signed with Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) and 6SIGMA Shipyards, the port will now be able to accommodate three Norwegian vessels until the end of November 2023.
The Princess Elizabeth Dry Dock has been actively diversifying its customer base beyond TNPA marine craft, after recently completing ship repair work on two vessels, the port is now eagerly anticipating the arrival of the Saga Sea before the end of November.
Port of East London Manager Siphiwe Mthembu expressed his team’s “dedication to providing exceptional service” to 6SIGMA Shipyards. Mthembu highlighted the immense value of this partnership, not only in terms of revenue for the port but also the employment opportunities it brings to the East London community. “The Port of East London team has been hard at work to give 6SIGMA Shipyards a service to write back home about. Besides the revenue this partnership brings, what is most exciting is the employment opportunity for the community of East London” said Mthembu.
The servicing of the three Norwegian vessels is expected to generate approximately 70 to 100 employment opportunities for the local community, this development is a promising step towards economic growth and job creation in the area.
The Princess Elizabeth Dry Dock, boasting a docking length of 200 meters (with an emergency docking length of 210 meters) is equipped with four electric cranes with a combined capacity of 39 tons. These facilities will enable efficient and effective servicing of the vessels, ensuring the highest standards of quality and safety.
