TYOLOMNQA – Eastern Cape Maths and Science teaching received a boost as the Romanian Embassy handed over a R1 million donation to the province at Tsholomnqa High School in Tsholomnqa, in rural of Buffalo City Metro District on 2nd August 2023.
This initiative was done to support and provide Maths and Science teaching and learning tools to needy schools in the province, other beneficiaries of this Romanian Embassy donation included the following schools; Baleni secondary school in Bizana (Alfred Nzo District), Ngwenyathi High in Nxarhuni(Buffalo City Metro District), Philemon Ngcelwane High in Mdantsane(Buffalo City District)and Tsholomnqa high school in Tsholomnqa(Buffalo City District).
MEC of Education in the Eastern Cape Fundile Gade who was present said, “We want to promise the people of the province that yes we might have started a bit smaller but we intend to become bigger especially when you talk about rural development strategy of the province which is in my view one of the areas that needed special attention in terms of development,” Gade.
In addition to providing financial support, the Romanian Embassy’s donation also aimed to add a touch of creativity to Maths and Science teaching in the Eastern Cape. Her Exellency Monica Sitaru Ambassador shared some light on the Romanian assistance program,”I would like to underline that Romanian has decided to increase the yearly allocation for African continent from 14.5% in 2021 to 17% of the total ministry of foreign affairs official development assistance budget for 2022-2025 these kind figures will allows us to continue with such kind of programs in South Africa,”she said.
The funds will be used to purchase innovative teaching tools such as interactive whiteboards, science experiment kits, and mathematical models. These tools will not only make the learning process more engaging for students but also allow teachers to explore new and exciting ways of presenting complex concepts.
During the donation Bathandwa Kwababa, who established and oversees The African Coalition Institute, a legally recognized non-profit organization, was also in attendance. The African Coalition Institute is a registered non profit organization which works closely with rural and township schools.
Students of Tsholomnqa High School expressed their appreciation and excitement for this initiative,”We are so honoured to have this opportunity for this people to come visit our school because this gives hope not only to us but also our parents,” expressed Lwandiswe Wethu grade 12 student from Tsholomnqa high school .
With this infusion of creativity, Maths and Science classes in needy schools will be transformed into dynamic and interactive environments, sparking curiosity and an active interest among students. By combining traditional teaching methods with these new tools, educators will be able to unleash their own creativity and inspire a love for Maths and Science in their students.
