GRAFF REINET – Five(5) people died, while three others sustained serious injuries in a car accident that happened on the R75 road near Volwefonteim between Kariega and Graaff Reinet in the Eastern Cape province.
Eastern Cape Department of Transport Spokesperson Unathi Binqose said, the accident happened after two vehicles collided head on and both caught fire leaving the occupants burnt to no recognition on Thursday afternoon.
Binqose said a Toyota Prada with 4 occupants collided head-on with a VW Jetta also with 4 occupants. Both vehicles overturned and both caught fire after impact.
“All four occupants of the VW Jetta (3 males and 1 female) died on the scene – aburnt beyond recognition,” Binqose.
In addition, on the Prada, 1 adult female died on the scene while 3 other occupants (2 males and a female) were able to crawl out of the vehicle on time and escape with some serious injuries.
1 male was transported to Sundays Valley Hospital in Kirkwood while the other 2 were taken to Cuyler Hospital in Kariega.
A case of culpable homicide has been opened for further investigations.
