EAST LONDON – Eastern Cape hosted the provincial Indigenous Games(IG) that were launched on July 21, 2023 in Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, East London. Over the course of two days, the games showcased the participation of 6 districts and 2 Eastern Cape Metros. These Indigenous Games served as a powerful reminder of our rich heritage, interwoven culture, and profound ancestral connections, while also evoking a sense of innocence.
The government’s aim was to foster a socially cohesive nation, celebrating and exhibiting our diverse culture and heritage. The Indigenous Games formed a crucial part of the active Nation Programs, which provided support for wide spread engagement in sports and recreational activities, and were included as annual planned events organized by the Department.
In preparation for the National Games in KwaZulu-Natal during heritage month, a total of 120 athletes were carefully selected to represent the Eastern Cape Province. The Eastern Cape team aspired to surpass their 3rd place finish from the previous year and aimed to make significant improvements in this year’s competition.
The Indigenous Games encompassed nine distinct codes, namely Puca, Drie Stokkies, Kgati/Ugqaphu, KhoKho, Jukskei, Ncuva, Morabaraba, and Dibeke.
During her address, Honorable MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe of Eastern Cape Department of Sports Recreation Arts and Culture conveyed her best wishes to team Eastern Cape as they prepared to represent the province in September she said , “Let me congratulate the 120 athletes who will be representing the province in KwaZulu Natal in the Indigenous Games National Championships. They carry the hopes and aspirations of this province. In 2021 we came in 8th position and we took that as an opportunity to improve. That is why we came in 3rd position last year. This year we expect improvement again and nothing will stand in our way. We want to assure the 120 that has been chosen to represent us that we are fully behind them as the province.” Kontsiwe expressed .
From the outset, it was clear that the athletes competing in the games carried the hopes and aspirations of their respective districts and provinces. Their commitment and dedication were evident in each match, as they showcased their skills and competed fiercely for victory. The successful Provincial Indigenous Games have left a lasting impact on participants and the province as a whole,these traditional games not only serve as a reminder of our shared heritage but also foster unity and pride in our diverse cultures.
