EAST LONDON – On Tuesday, 6th of June, Nahoon Beach in East London was shutdown by officials after a paddler was attacked by a shark. The paddler survive the attack with the shark only breaking the paddler’s surf ski.
Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality(BCMM) is issuing a warning to all who might be thinking of visiting the beach this winter season.
Siani Tinely the, BCMM Aquarium Manager says,” This time of year we normally have the sardine run that goes past our coastline and with this comes an increase in sea bird activity as well as sea mammals, whales, dolphins, seals and sharks and all marine predators. They all follow the sardine run to a certain point.”
Tinely also warns the public that if they see a bird dive into the ocean then that means there is a lot of bait and predator activity.
Tinely added that,” In the past few days, we have witnessed sea bird activity and dolphin activity and with this the challenge of sharks would go with it.” She adds that with sharks they mistake people swimming, surfboard and a ski as prey.
Where there’s prey, a predator is always not far away. It is advised to look out for the signs mentioned above to keep safe at the beach as the Nahoon Beach is set to open again today.
