STUTTERHEIM – From humble beginnings of Stuttereim, a young Eastern Cape boy who’s been disabled for 10 years who lives with his family, he started playing wheelchair basketball, has been recognised international.
Ntando Nokama,17, a young boy from Mgwali village, in Stuttereim is leaving with a disability of not having both legs. Ntando was brought to Cecelia Makhiwane Hospital for check ups, doctors had to amputate his legs. It was a difficult time to his family since other students were making fun of him, and he ultimately had to change schools in and out.
Ntombizanele Nokama his mother said, “I was heartbroken to see my son in that state, and I occasionally cried as I dropped him off at school. However, I am grateful to the Lord now as I cherish my son,”said Ntombizandile Nokama.
Only the environment is disabled, neither children nor people are.
The Eastern Cape Department of Education has responsibility to improve the environment in their favour with one of their phrase, ‘bonke ngabethu’.
Simon Ncaphayi Deputy Director of inclusive education at EC Department of education further said, ” as the department we fully support Ntando from the small village, we encourage him and other young people to concentrate on their academics and develop a variety of talents”.
According to Ntando Nokama, children with disabilities should be aware that despite their physical limitations, they can still thrive.
In addition Ntando acknowledged his gratitude for his schoolmates assistance.
“I encouraged all of the young people to pay attention to their education and take part in extracurricular activities. I pledge to construct a home for my family,” Ntando.
In addition Ntando Nokama will be representing South Africa at under 17 wheelchair tennis championship in Japan, from 12th to 20th June this year.
Eastern Cape Department of education couldn’t hesitate to assist Nokama’s family with some groceries, full kit for Ntando and all travel expenses.
Ntando is a 17 year old, pursuing his studies at Vukuhambe special school in Mdantsane.
