EAST LONDON – Transnet gifts 100 desks to a public school in Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality(BCMM).
In a heartwarming gesture by the Transnet National Ports Authority(TNPA) Port of East London to Mzamowethu Public School situated in the Buffalo City Metro. The TNPA recently donated 100 school desks to the public school the school is located within the informal settlement of Mzamomuhle and has long struggled with limited resources, including a scarcity of teaching materials and a shortage of desks and classrooms.
However this predicament is set to change with this generous contribution by TNPA during the official handover ceremony Sphiwe Mthembu, the Port Manager for the Port of East London, spoke about TNPA’s commitment to driving socio-economic development in the communities it serves.
“TNPA is committed to driving the socio-economic programme in the community in which the ports operates. This donation is significant as we commemorate the youth of 1976. We are confident that the little we have done today will contribute greatly towards the moulding of these young minds and future leaders,” said the Port’s Manager.
Welcoming the remarkable donation, Mr. Mxolisi Mgqibelo, the Schsol Principal, expressed his gratitude and emphasized the positive impact that the new desks would have on the learning journey of the school’s 1 900 learners.
Mzamowethu Public School classified as a quartile three school and its learners are exempt from school fees, meaning that school has significant funding constrains.
Despite these challenges, the school has managed to achieve an impressive academic ranking, holding the third position in the esteemed Buffalo City Metro.
The donation of 100 desks not only eradicates the need for students to rely on buckets as makeshift chairs but also symbolizes a profound transformation in the learning environment.
The Port of East London’s generosity is set to inspire other organizations and individuals to extend their support to schools facing similar resource challenges. As the desks find their place in the classrooms of Mzamowethu Public School, they serve as a reminder that even a seemingly small contribution can have a monumental impact on the lives of students and the community as a whole.
