NMBMM – The Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality(NMBMM) and the Mandela Bay Development Agency(MBDA) Board have recently ran into some trouble with each other over the appointment of MBDA CEO Anele Qaba. This has caused National Treasury to withhold funding to the metropolitan municipality until the matter has been resolved.
This was revealed by the Democratic Alliance(DA) in the Eastern Cape Nelson Mandela Bay(NMB) Caucus Leadership’s, Retief Odendaal, in a media statement, issued on 19th July 2023.
The appointment of the CEO came after the Bay City Manager, Dr Noxolo Nqwazi formally warned them against the appointment of Qaba as the new MBDA CEO.
The DA also warned against the decision and now have appealed to Dr Nqwazi to withhold funding temporarily to the Municipality owned agency till the matter is dealt with. The DA formally metioned to Council for the MBDA Board to be temporary dissolved and an interim board to be appointed.
Cllr Odendaal says,” The recent impasse between the MBDA and the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality on the appoint of MBDA CEO, Anele Qaba has caused an irretrievable breakdown of trust between the parties. The Democratic Alliance has therefore tabled a formal motion to Council to dissolve the existing board and to appoint a temporary board.”
With National Treasury withholding all funding to the NMBMM until the matter is resolved, the conflict between the two parties could have disasterious consequences for the citizens if this goes on for too long.
